Homeworld 1 and 2's art director, Rob Cunningham is now CEO of developer Blackbird Interactive, and explained in a press release that this game meets the goals he was aiming to meet almost 20 years ago: Homeworld 2 arrived in 2003, and the sequel's story takes place generations after that game's events. The game has been "developed for powerful modern hardware", and will include new ships, fully simulated ballistics, persistent fleets (with battle damage lingering from mission to mission), and multiple modes, including a campaign, multiplayer, and a "co-op mode with a roguelike twist." We got a look at how the game will include battles in open space as well as across giant space deralicts called megaliths.

Announced during The Game Awards 2021, Homeworld 3 got a trailer mixing cinematics with in-engine footage, and announcing the game's release for Steam and Epic Games Store.
